Are New Year’s resolutions really just like a beautifully wrapped gift that you never get around to opening? It’s that time of the year when we all become professional goal-setters, only to realize that our commitment level might be as sturdy as a house of cards. The struggle is real when you're torn between hitting the gym and hitting the snooze button. Let’s face it, resolutions are like a to-do list for the first week of January.

So, there’s this myth going around that you can form a habit in just 21 days. Well, surprise, surprise - that’s not quite true. It actually takes a whole lot longer, like around two to six months. Speaking from my own experience, I’d try sticking to something for a few weeks, only to slip back into my old ways. That’s why this year, on New Year's Eve, I sat down and thought about the goals I wanted to achieve. I made a conscious decision to hold off until Spring before fully committing. This little grace period gave me the chance to mentally gear up and really focus on my resolutions. Plus, Spring brings a whole new level of motivation - the fresh start, the longer days. What more could you want, right?

Resolutions need to feel less like work and more like inspirations for them to work for me. I feel like Spring does that.

Now that the weather’s getting warmer and days are getting longer, I’ve set three goals for myself. They’re not grandiose, but realistic and flexible.

Self love...

I feel like this one has so many facets. Showing yourself love can be as small as rewarding yourself that Starbucks Latte for completing an assignment or meeting a deadline to planning that trip to Venice, Italy you've always wanted.

Self-love is all about giving your mind and body the love and care they deserve. When you have a healthy body and mind, it totally shapes how you go about your daily life. I've always made an effort to look after myself, but this year, I'm going all out.

“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don't adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.” — Confucius

Clear out any/all clutter...

Getting rid of stuff isn't just about organizing your closet or shoe collection; it goes way beyond that. When I was a kid, my house was always filled with random things. Now that I'm older, I really appreciate having some breathing room. However, there are other parts of my life that could definitely use some decluttering too.

My digital footprint is an area that needs attention. Email newsletters, blogs, social networks, online reading and watching, forums, etc. — are they essential? Not really. So, I've begun the habit of unsubscribing to mailing lists and gotten rid of Social Media accounts I do not use. Bye-bye Snapchat and TikTok.

People. Making that circle small, this is important to me. As I've gotten older, quality over quantity means a heck of a lot more. I would rather have four besties than a dozen acquaintances. This lessens the drama and filters out relationships that don't work for me.

Be more present as a parent...

While alone time is important for creativity and inspiration, spending quality time with my son is always a priority. Studies have proven that the amount of time spent with loved ones goes a long way towards boosting happiness and this is a fact. After quality time with my son, I always walk away feeling great.

While we get to spend time together at home, trips and seeing new places together is something I've always wanted to do. I would love for my son to grow up seeing all the places I never got to see when I was his age. So, while money can’t buy you happiness, spending time with the ones you love, is always a good investment!

Final thoughts...

It is almost impossible for me not to feel inspired when winter months have finally come to an end and the warmth of spring is upon me. When I see the world around me renew itself and grow, I can’t help but feel inspired! I hope you do too! 😊
